Regeneration of the Industrial Heritage
Since its completion in 1973, Cheongju Tobacco Factory has been the center of Cheongju’s industrial economy as the largest factory in Korea, producing 10 billion cigarettes a year. However, after the closure was decided in 1999, the scale gradually decreased and was completely closed in 2004. Today, expressed in the fourth industrial era, the tobacco factory, which retains the traces of modern industry, becomes a “cultural plaza” by adding new values of craft and culture.
